Thoughts give me wings

July 15, 2007 · 7 Comments

Maybe you have more female friends than male friends?

    Or

Does our society look down on men who go travelling instead of making a living for the family?

if I change it to “有理想有魄力有骨氣有才情的男性”, does it sound odd, or at least rare?

Most of my friends (not many, dare I say) who fall in this category have opted not to stay in/come back to HK. Those in HK (male), except the very few in the “elite” jobs (MC, I-Bank etc), are either moaning about their jobs and/or considering moving into finance. Sigh.

Going around? I wish so too. But to have that “extra-money”, you need to show that you can fulfill the basic economic necessity and at least have quite a bit of savings too, in order to prove to loved ones that you really can afford that “luxury” - not a particularly cheap/affordable one. But unless you work in the elitist industry it’d take forever to reach that state of financial liberty… and those are the selected few, hahaha
    (just speaking out of jealousy?)

Well said, Eugene. I only managed to take 2 months off for travelling after 5 years of saving. I am extremely jealous of those who can work for 3 years, have a couple of million in the bank and then proceed to “walk the Earth”. If only……

no way guys!!! Given the fact that most girls receive less pay than male counterparts, we don’t save as much to travel around as you think. We just have to act different from normal girls like shopping for cosmetics and clothes.
I agree that the norm goes against guys going traveling till the last penny.
As Eugene said, ‘you need to show that you can fulfill the basic economic necessity’. See, you should just go against the norms imposed on you! How many millions is considered to be basic?
It’s a circular argument itself, if you really would act and go away just like that, you simply won’t care for the norm and don’t have to define what’s basic need. And indeed, we are having too many things we don’t need.
Of course, to tell that to your loved one it’s another story. I do appreciate your dedication to her, how sweet!
A matter of choice, as always.

And, it also has to do with social system. In germany (or australia mostly from my experience) guys travel as much as girls. They don’t have to care for their family, the govt does it for them. The girls are very proud of their independence and expectation of a guy is very different from HK girls. They look for knowledge and inspiration, not security.
And one final point, it is also a matter of age. I mean, don’t bother about travelling when u are still under 30. Come on, do that when u are more mature la.

I would have thought that a large proportion of travellers tend to take a year out to travel before they join University in Europe.
